Opportunity

The Expanish / UCEAP Business in Barcelona Study Abroad Program invites applications for a faculty position to teach an advanced undergraduate Macroeconomics course. We seek an accomplished and dynamic economist who can effectively contextualize core macroeconomic principles within the complexities of the European Union, the Eurozone, and the diverse economies of its member states.

This role requires a commitment to experiential learning, leveraging Barcelona and its relationship with the EU to provide students with a practical, real-world understanding of economic policy.

Course Description

Macroeconomics

This immersive course covers the intricate interplay between economic theory, policy frameworks, and real-world applications within the context of Europe's diverse economies. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of macroeconomic principles and their implications for the European Union (EU) and individual member states.

The course begins with an overview of macroeconomic fundamentals, providing a solid foundation in key concepts such as GDP, inflation, unemployment, fiscal policy, monetary policy, and international trade.

Other areas of instruction include:

  • Comparative Analysis: Students will analyze the economic structures, challenges, and policy responses across various European countries, including but not limited to the Eurozone economies.

  • EU and Eurozone: Content will include the evolution of the European Union, the role of the European Central Bank (ECB), and the challenges and opportunities posed by a common currency.

  • Financial Crises: The course will cover historical financial crises, analyzing their causes, the responses implemented (e.g., austerity vs. stimulus), and deriving lessons for enhancing economic resilience and stability.

The Professor will be expected to integrate the local context through mandatory field visits. (e.g., visits to financial institutions, governmental agencies, or economic think tanks in Barcelona) and case studies relevant to the Catalan and Spanish economies.
